The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has emphasized the critical importance of dialogue, inclusiveness, and institutional accountability as the foundation for strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking at the Southwest Citizens and Government Engagement Summit, held under the theme “Strengthening Democracy Through Dialogue: Assessing Progress, Charting the Future,” the monarch reaffirmed the Yoruba cultural legacy of participatory governance, which he said has long upheld the values of merit, consensus, and accountability in leadership.
In his address, the Alaafin stated:
“Dialogue is the cornerstone of democracy. It is through open and inclusive conversations that we can address the pressing issues of our communities. I commend the organizers of this summit for bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to share ideas and best practices.”
The revered monarch acknowledged the progress made in nurturing democratic institutions in Nigeria but noted that the system still faces significant challenges such as corruption, electoral malpractices, and the erosion of public trust.
“To chart a brighter future,” he continued, “we must prioritize citizen engagement and participation. We must create platforms for citizens to contribute to policy-making processes and hold leaders accountable. We must also strengthen institutions, ensuring they are independent, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people.”
Oba Owoade also highlighted the indispensable role of traditional rulers in promoting peace, unity, and stability within their communities.
“As traditional rulers, we have a critical role to play in promoting peace, unity, and stability. We must work closely with government and other stakeholders to resolve conflicts, promote social cohesion, and protect the vulnerable,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, the Alaafin urged participants to remain steadfast in upholding the ideals of democracy and collaborative governance.
“Let us continue to engage, collaborate, and innovate to ensure that our democracy serves the interests of all citizens. Together, we can build a brighter future for our region and our nation,” he concluded.
The summit brought together government officials, civil society leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens across the Southwest region to deliberate on ways to deepen democratic governance and foster inclusive development.
