By BODE DUROJAIYE Life is full of tests, trials, disappointments, and unmet expectations, isn’t it? We feel loss, frustration, and that nagging sense of “ugh” when things go wrong.

But can we have joy in the middle of our struggles?
In a world that often feels chaotic and demanding, finding a steady sense of happiness can feel like chasing a mirage.
True joy, however, is not a fleeting emotion dependant on external circumstances, it is a quiet, profound, and abiding power that resides deep within the heart.
Nurturing this inner joy is a conscious choice, as a wellspring that acts as an anchor in storms and a light in darkness.
While happiness is often triggered by favourable events (a promotion, a gift, a sunny day), joy is cultivated internally and remains constant even when life is challenging.
True joy is about who you are inside, not what you carry on the outside. It is a deep peace that transcends immediate difficulties.
Cultivating this joy requires intention and daily practise. Gratitude shifts your mindset from scarcity to abundance. Reflecting on small blessings—a warm cup of coffee, the sun on your skin, or a kind word—waters the seeds of joy.
In times of deep sorrow, when our very existence is threatened and people are killed, injured, and disabled daily, it is natural to feel overwhelmed by pain. Many deeply grieve over the harsh reality and the unending cycle of suffering it entails.
However, it is crucial not to allow ourselves to be consumed by despair. While acknowledging our sorrow, we must also strive to find light and hope, even in the darkest moments.
Joy in the midst of sorrow and tribulations is a deep, abiding confidence in God’s purpose, rather than a superficial emotion, allowing for “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” experiences.
It is maintained by focusing on eternal hope, God’s sovereignty, prayer, and the promise that trials produce spiritual maturity and endurance.
Trials are not meaningless; they are designed to develop endurance, character, and hope.
Cultivating a sense of joy empowers us to overcome difficulties and maintain hope, transforming sorrow into joy. This delicate balance between joy and sorrow strengthens our fortitude and our faith in a future filled with joy.
