Why Parents Must Be Cautious Against Forcing Their Children to Excel Educationally

The adolescent stage is a crucial phase of development characterized by physical, emotional, social, and intellectual changes that, if not properly guided, can lead to frustration and maladjustment.

One of the major challenges adolescents face is the search for identity, which, if unresolved, may result in role confusion. During this period, young people strive to understand the types of behavior expected of them, and when they fail to do so, conflicts with adults often arise. Adolescents also tend to resist control, especially when they are unable to meet certain developmental or societal expectations.

According to experts in guidance and counseling, identity formation involves two principal phenomena: a crisis, during which previously developed values and choices are re-examined, and a commitment to specific roles in life. Identity crises can easily throw an adolescent off balance emotionally, leading to confusion about values, attitudes, and lifestyle choices.

Furthermore, adolescents face numerous challenges in contemporary society — including issues of personal appearance, fashion, independence, religious values, substance abuse, sexuality, driving, education, and career choices. Among these, sexual development is described as one of the most dramatic changes, often accompanied by curiosity and misinformation, particularly in societies where formal sex education is lacking.

In light of these challenges, Bode Durojaye cautions that parents to avoid forcing their children to excel educationally irrespective of their level of intelligence or compelling them into careers for which they lack interest, aptitude, and ability.

Many parents make the mistake of choosing school subjects or career paths for their children, expecting compliance without considering the child’s individual strengths or desires. When such children fail to meet expectations, parents often express disappointment and anger, leading to emotional strain.

Some adolescents, in an attempt to please their parents, may resort to examination malpractices or even run away from home. If caught, they face severe consequences such as suspension, expulsion, or public humiliation.

Therefore, parents are advised to exercise patience, understanding, and flexibility in dealing with their adolescent children. Recognizing their individuality and guiding them with empathy rather than compulsion will foster healthier emotional growth and more sustainable success.
