Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Drama: Soun Suspends Balogun Over Alleged Failure to Sign Oath

The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, has indefinitely suspended Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun as Balogun of Ogbomosoland over his alleged refusal to sign the prescribed Oath of Allegiance to the throne.

In a letter dated October 20, 2026, the monarch cited Dr. Balogun’s continued failure to fulfil the oath requirement, describing it as a fundamental obligation attached to his installation.

The suspension is particularly significant given that Dr. Balogun’s emergence as Balogun of Ogbomosoland followed an appointment process approved by the Oyo State Government.

In April 28th, 2025, the state government announced its approval of Dr. Balogun’s appointment to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former titleholder, Alhaji Shittu Fasina.

The announcement, made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that Dr. Balogun was unanimously nominated by the Balogun Taiwo Atere-Gbebi Ruling House and endorsed by the Soun, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, in his capacity as the consenting authority.

This means that Dr. Balogun’s appointment had received government approval and the monarch’s endorsement before the latest suspension notice.

The present development raises questions about the fulfilment of the conditions attached to the installation and the implications of the monarch’s decision for the title.

While the Soun’s letter identifies the alleged failure to sign the oath as the reason for the suspension, further clarification from the parties involved may be necessary to establish the full circumstances surrounding the dispute.

For now, attention will be on Dr. Balogun’s response, the position of the Oyo State Government and any further steps by the relevant chieftaincy authorities.
