Makinde Elevates Alagere of Ago-Are, Approves Beaded Crown for Monarch

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the elevation of the Alagere of Ago-Are, Oba Azeez Oyetunde Uthman, with authorisation for the monarch to wear a beaded crown, marking a major development in the traditional institution of Ago-Are.

The approval, which takes effect from October 13, 2026, was communicated in an official letter dated October 20, 2026, from the Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

In the letter, referenced CB.141/25/16/10, the state government stated that the governor had exercised his powers under the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000, to approve the conferment of the elevated Obaship status on the traditional ruler.

Consequently, the monarch is to wear a beaded crown and be formally addressed as His Royal Majesty, Oba Azeez Oyetunde Uthman, the Alagere of Ago-Are.

The ministry also confirmed that the approval would be published in the Oyo State Government’s official gazette, providing for its formal documentation within the state’s chieftaincy administration.

The letter was signed by Kola Abiola, Director of Chieftaincy Matters, on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The approval represents a notable moment for Ago-Are, in Atisbo Local Government Area, as the community’s traditional ruler assumes the newly approved status under the state’s chieftaincy framework.

With the effective date set for October 13, the development underscores the role of the state government in the formal recognition and administration of traditional institutions across Oyo State.
