Ogun State Suspends Esеlu of Iselu Over Alleged Political Interference

The Ogun State Government has suspended Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Esеlu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, with immediate effect over allegations of partisan political activities.

The decision, contained in an official-looking letter dated October 20, 2026, was issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and signed by the Commissioner, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat.

The letter stated that the State Executive Council had received several complaints about the monarch’s alleged political conduct, including activities reportedly carried out under his direction and subsequently publicised.

According to the government, traditional rulers are expected to remain above partisan politics to preserve the dignity of their stools and maintain peace among subjects with different political loyalties.

Citing Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, the government said the suspension would remain in force pending a detailed investigation into the allegations.

Under the directives, Oba Akinyemi is required to vacate the Esеlu Palace and stay away from the premises throughout the suspension. He is also prohibited from presenting himself or being recognised as the reigning Esеlu during the period, as well as from wearing or using royal symbols, including a crown, ìlẹ̀kẹ̀, beaded staff and ìrùkẹ̀rẹ̀.

The monarch has further been directed to appear before any meeting or investigative hearing convened by the state government.

Investigation to determine next steps

The suspension places the monarch’s position under official scrutiny while the government examines the allegations against him.
